About us
We are rePhos. iGEM 2020, a team of 22 students from China. Our project aims to reduce the excessive utilization of phosphorous fertilizer by rebuilding a regulatory relationship between phosphate-solubilizing bacteria and plants. This can prevent environmental damage as well.
Background
Phosphorus is one of the key elements in the crops’ nutrition. It is very essential to the metabolic processes, such as photosynthesis, energy transfer, signal transduction, macromolecular biosynthesis, and respiration in plants (Khan et al., 2010). Thus, an input of phosphorus is crucial for food production. In fact, 80-90% of the total world demand for phosphorus is from agriculture. So, phosphorus fertilizer is artificially used in arable lands, to increase crop yield and ensure crop qualities. There are several problems in the usage of this kind of fertilizer.
Facts you might not know
Facts about phosphorus
1. Phosphorus is one of the necessary elements of life.
2. The lack of phosphorus will hinder the growth of plants and turn their leaves yellow.
3. Excessive phosphorus washed into rivers will cause algal bloom.
Facts about phosphate-solubilizing bacteria
1. Phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) are beneficial bacteria capable of solubilizing inorganic phosphorus from insoluble compounds.
2. It was firstly discovered and isolated from the soil sample in Japan in 1992.
